Can’t Put on Your Socks by Yourself? A Sock Aid May Help!

③ Medical Japanese

Putting on socks is something most people do every day without thinking. However, after surgery, during pregnancy, or as we get older, this simple task can become surprisingly difficult.

If you struggle to reach your feet or bend forward comfortably, a sock aid may help you put on your socks independently.

As an Occupational Therapist (OT), I often recommend assistive devices like a sock aid to help people maintain their independence in daily life.

What Is a Sock Aid?

A sock aid is a simple assistive device designed to help people put on socks without bending over.

You place the sock over the plastic or fabric holder, insert your foot, and pull the straps to slide the sock onto your foot.

It is lightweight, easy to use, and requires very little effort.

Who Can Benefit from a Sock Aid?

A sock aid may be helpful for people who have difficulty bending or reaching their feet, including:

  • People recovering from hip or knee surgery
  • Older adults with reduced flexibility
  • Pregnant women
  • People with chronic back pain
  • Individuals with arthritis
  • People with Parkinson’s disease
  • Individuals recovering from a stroke (depending on their condition)

For many people, this simple device makes dressing much easier and reduces the need for assistance.

How to Use a Sock Aid

Using a sock aid is very simple.

Step 1

Place the sock over the sock aid.

Step 2

Lower the sock aid to the floor and insert your foot into the opening.

Step 3

Pull both straps evenly while sliding your foot forward.

The sock will gradually slide onto your foot.

With a little practice, many people can put on their socks independently within a few minutes.

Why Independence Matters

As an occupational therapist, I believe that assistive devices are not about doing less—they are about helping people do more on their own.

Being able to put on your own socks may seem like a small achievement, but it can make a big difference.

Independent dressing can:

  • Increase confidence
  • Reduce dependence on family members
  • Improve quality of life
  • Encourage continued independence in daily activities

Sometimes, a simple tool can make everyday life much easier.

Can You Make a Sock Aid Yourself?

Commercial sock aids usually cost around ¥2,000 to ¥3,000.

If you only need one temporarily, you may prefer to make your own using inexpensive materials.

There are several DIY methods available, and I will introduce one in another article.

Making your own sock aid can be an affordable option while still helping you regain independence.

Important Safety Tips

Although a sock aid is useful, it may not be suitable for everyone.

Some people may need assistance if they have:

  • Severe weakness in their hands
  • Poor balance
  • Significant cognitive impairment

If you are unsure whether a sock aid is appropriate for you, consult an occupational therapist or another healthcare professional.

My Experience as an Occupational Therapist

When I worked as an occupational therapist in a hospital, I made handmade sock aids for some of my patients.

Every patient had a different reason for needing one. Some had undergone surgery for a hip fracture and were unable to bend their hips deeply. Others could not reach their feet to put on their socks independently. Some had hand tremors, making it difficult to hold or pull on their socks.

I also worked with patients who were at risk of falling because they lost their sitting balance when reaching toward their feet. Others had limited flexibility and simply could not reach their feet safely.

For these individuals, a sock aid was more than just a helpful tool—it allowed them to dress more independently and safely. Even a simple assistive device can make a meaningful difference in a person’s daily life and confidence.
