I joined a special round-trip package on the Sunflower Ferry and traveled from Kobe to Beppu. I chose the Private Bed Plan, which cost about ¥16,000 per person. (Prices may vary depending on the season and special promotions.)
To keep my travel costs low, I decided not to stay at a hotel. Instead, I enjoyed a one-day trip in Beppu before returning by ferry.
I was surprised by how much I could do in just one day. I had plenty of time to relax in a hot spring, visit famous sightseeing spots, and enjoy delicious local food.
During my trip, I visited both Yufuin and Beppu. However, if your time or budget is limited, I think Beppu alone is enough for a wonderful day trip. Of course, if you prefer a slower and more relaxing vacation, staying one or two nights in Beppu is also a great option.
One of the highlights of Beppu is its many hot springs. You can experience a traditional steam bath (Mushi-yu), visit several hot springs, and explore the famous “Hells of Beppu,” a group of colorful hot spring ponds that are popular tourist attractions.
Beppu is also famous for its local cuisine. During my trip, I tried Toriten (tempura-style chicken) for the first time. I also enjoyed Ryukyu, a local rice bowl made with fresh sashimi marinated in a special sauce.
My favorite dish was the Toriten. It was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and one of the most delicious chicken dishes I have ever eaten.
If you are looking for an affordable and relaxing trip in Japan, I highly recommend taking the Sunflower Ferry to Beppu. Even if you only have one day, you can still enjoy hot springs, sightseeing, and delicious local food.

IThis is the Private Bed on the Sunflower Ferry.
It is similar to a capsule hotel, giving each passenger a private sleeping space.
Each bed has a reading light, a power outlet, and a small space for personal belongings, making the journey comfortable.
Dinner on the ferry was served buffet-style.
