I have experienced the same difficulties in my own language-learning journey.

I Studied English for Six Years, but I Still Could Not Use It

I am Japanese. When I was a student, English was a compulsory subject from junior high school. I studied English for a total of six years during junior high school and high school.

However, even after studying for six years, I did not feel that I could actually use English.

Later, I had the opportunity to go to Australia on a working holiday. I wanted to learn more English and communicate with people from different countries, so I attended a language school and started studying English again.

At that time, I studied with Cambridge English materials.

Through this experience, I learned that studying something only once is not enough to acquire a language. We need to review and practise what we have learned many times.

However, continuing to study alone is not easy. Repeating the same material can become boring, and it can be difficult to continue studying when we are busy.

Because I have experienced these difficulties myself, I understand how challenging it can be to learn Japanese.

I Created a Japanese App for Independent Learners

I have created a self-study app that helps beginners learn Japanese independently.

The app I am sharing for free today is an English-language version for people learning Japanese.

Japanese Self-Study: GENKI Lesson 1 — First Meeting

I created this app to help learners review the vocabulary, grammar and conversations from GENKI Lesson 1.

It is designed so that learners can understand what to study next and continue at their own pace, even when a teacher is not with them.

Who Can Use This App?

This app can be used by learners of all ages, including elementary school students, junior high school students, high school students, university students, adults and older learners.

It is especially suitable for people who:

• Are beginning to learn Japanese
• Want to study Japanese independently
• Are studying GENKI Lesson 1
• Want to review what they learned in class
• Want to practise vocabulary and grammar repeatedly
• Cannot read hiragana yet
• Want to learn Japanese through English explanations

Japanese words are also shown in romaji, so complete beginners can use the app even if they cannot read hiragana yet.

The romaji display can be turned on or off. When you become more familiar with hiragana, you can challenge yourself by studying without romaji.

I also hope that people who are interested in Japanese but feel that reading Japanese characters is too difficult will feel comfortable trying this app.

What You Will Learn in GENKI Lesson 1

The app allows you to study beginner-level Japanese vocabulary, grammar and conversations at your own pace.

The learning map is divided into 12 sections. You can study one section at a time, so you do not have to learn too much at once.

The app includes:

• Vocabulary cards
• Grammar explanations
• Conversation practice
• Multiple-choice questions
• Matching activities
• Typing exercises
• Quizzes
• Review activities
• A final goal check

You first learn new vocabulary and grammar and then complete practice activities and quizzes. If you make a mistake, you can review the material and try again.

The goal is not only to remember the correct answers but also to help you use the Japanese you have learned.

You Can Check Your Learning Progress

The learning map shows how much you have completed and what you can study next.

Your progress is automatically saved on the device you are using, so you can continue from where you stopped.

You do not need to complete everything in one day. For example, you can study one section each day or choose a pace that is comfortable for you.

The activities can be completed in short study sessions, making the app suitable for busy students and adults.

Learning Independently, Repeatedly and Enjoyably

The most important goal of this app is to help learners study independently, even when a teacher is not available.

Repetition is essential when learning a language. However, repeatedly studying the same content alone can be difficult.

For this reason, the app includes vocabulary cards, grammar explanations, conversations and different types of practice activities. I hope these features will help learners review Japanese in an enjoyable way.

I want to create an app that makes learners think, “I would like to study a little more,” instead of feeling that studying is something they have to do.

More Language Versions in the Future

This first app uses English to explain Japanese.

However, English is not the first language of everyone who wants to learn Japanese. In the future, I would also like to create Korean, Chinese, Indonesian and other language versions.

My hope is that people from many different countries and regions will be able to begin learning Japanese through a language they understand.

It may take time to support all these languages, but I would like to add them gradually, one by one. Please look forward to future versions.

Japanese-Learning Apps for Christians and Missionaries

This app teaches general Japanese used in everyday life.

In the future, I would also like to create apps for Christians and missionaries. These apps could teach Japanese words and expressions used when reading the Bible, attending church, praying and communicating with people in Christian communities.

My goal is to help Christians and missionaries living in Japan use Japanese both in their daily lives and at church.

I will continue creating new learning apps little by little, so please look forward to them.
